PORTABLE BROADBAND REVIEW
|
Mobile Portable Broadband Just to clarify the matter, mobile broadband is NOT broadband for mobile phones. PORTABLE broadband uses a mobile sim card to receive a signal to create suprisingly powerful wireless internet connections for laptops and desktop computers at home or away from home (or the office) and if in a reasonably good signal area it can actually replace regular broadband …. |
| Portable broadband, a personal review.
You have probably heard of it or maybe even know someone who uses it, and that’s mobile broadband which is often mistaken as broadband for mobile phones that is supplied by the mobile phone networks such as Orange, Vodaphone etc and can be purchased online at : At Photographers-Lot, we use Orange mobile portable broadband ourselves and find it extremely usefull, definately fast enough to work with and highly recommend it. Admittedly, THOUGH portable broadband in general is NOT as fast as cable or landline broadband generally found in the home, which should not be surprising BUT we did find it is definately powerfull enough for most applications online and is the perfect gadget for anyone on the move with a laptop or at home with a desktop pc. |

CAN MOBILE BROADBAND REPLACE LANDLINE DIAL UP OR HOME BROADBAND ? Mobile broadband can certainly be used as a replacement for dial up internet connections plus is cheaper each month if a dial up connection is used regularly, and if used in an area with a good telecommunications signal, can replace home broadband, fixed landline or cable broadband though speeds are not as good, the speeds are definately good enough for most general internet use and even IT work and ftp uploads (videos + large files do struggle in this area) We can recommend Orange mobile broadband, T-Mobile + 3g portable broadband as we use them regularly ouselves for many hours each day and have found them to be very reliable, even on a low signal they will produce the goods and strong internet connections though 3g was the worst on a low signal. What’s a dongle ? A dongle is the small unit that plugs into your usb port and receives the wireless broadband supply. . HOW PORTABLE BROADBAND WORKS. The ‘dongle’ or modem ’stick’ is about the size of a standard portable memory usb stick. Intsead of memory inside, it contains a standard mobile phone sim card (which is why it’s called mobile broadband). The sim card inside, effectively behaves like it would in a mobile phone and is what the signal is passed through when connected to the net. Sounds a bit silly I know, but it works. With the ’sim card’ inside the little unit, the dongle or stick is plugged into your usb port. Once the cmputer or laptop has recognised it has a new device in the usb port, inbuilt drivers in the dongle or modem stick, will set up the new internet connection so there is no need for a cd rom drive either which means anyone using these new mini laptops can use them too. A mini control panel is what’s used to connect, disconnect, adjust settings for the connection on your computer and there are absolutely NO hubs, no hot spots required and no wireless modems required in order for this to work effectively, this thing works on its own and can literally be used almost anywhere, so long as you can get a signal, just like you need a signal on your mobile phone to make a call, the dongles need the signal to connect to the net and even 1 bar on the strength field is enough to connect properly. . USB PLUG ‘n’ PLAY DONGLES OR STICK MODEMS Because it is USB operated, means batteries are NOT required as the computers USB port will provide the power it needs via the usb connection, just like your opticle mouse lights up with power as soon as you plug it in, the dongle is powered in exactly the same way and it’s enough to do the job efficiently. PAYG OR CONTRACT And thats it really. These mobile or portable devices are available from the main mobile networks, 3g, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodaphone etc and can be purchased on a PAYG (pay as you go) basis where a top up of say £10 is reequired each month, just like you would buy a top for a mobile phone, the top ups on the dongles operate the same procedure. .
